Family Circle Cup Main Draw competition opened on Monday under heavy cloud cover and a threat of rain. Fourteen matches were scheduled and completed before rain finally fell, along with the No. 14 seed, Olga Govortsova (BLR). Govortsova lost at the hands of American Vania King 6-7(3), 7-6(5), 6-3. King dropped the first set and was down 5-2 before rallying back, taking the second set in a tie break, and the third 6-3 in a three-hour match.
Mallory Cecil, the 2008 SMASH Jr. Cup winner, made her Cup debut on Family Circle Magazine Stadium. Cecil, hailing from Spartanburg, South Carolina, is the only state native to win the SMASH Jr. Cup Girls 18s division in its history. With that win last year, she earned a birth into the Cup’s qualifying tournament. Due to an injury, that didn’t happen. The hard-hitting 18-year old wildcard, now a freshman at Duke University, put in a valiant effort as a Main Draw wildcard, but was outgunned on Monday by the tournament’s No. 13 seed, Virginie Razzano (FRA) 6-1, 6-2.
*Reaching the second round are qualifiers Anastasija Sevastova (LAT), Lenka Wienerova (SKV) and American hopeful, Melanie Oudin of Marietta, Georgia. The 17-year old Oudin is riding on a three-match winning streak after defeating Olga Savchuk (UKR) in today’s first round.
