The Family Circle Cup Community Outreach program is all about making a difference in the community. In 2002, the tournament started a scholarship grant at the College of Charleston for female student athletes who excel both on and off the playing field. Every year $5,000 is donated to an outstanding female athlete who is a well-rounded student, whose accomplishments include giving back to the community. The scholarship winner is selected based on a number of criteria including academic accomplishment, volunteerism/community involvement, financial need, and athletic accolades. This year’s winner is sophomore Isabel Boersma, a member of the College of Charleston’s Women’s Track & Field team.

“Receiving the Family Circle Cup Scholarship is an honor and an undeniable proof that there are rewards for passionate, hardworking young women. Most importantly though, it gives me the opportunity to better myself as an individual in every sense of the word.” says Boersma. “It means that I can spend more time doing the things I love, volunteering, studying and running. I sincerely thank the Family Circle Cup for this generous scholarship.”

Isabel Boersma meets with Caroline Wozniacki following her post-match press conference Wednesday night. Each scholarship applicant was asked to write a short essay on what makes her a good candidate for this scholarship. Through her letter, Boersma, a sophomore from Franklin, TN conveyed that she is as ambitious about her education as she is in her athletics.

As a heptathlete on the Cougar track and field squad, Boersma set an individual school record in 100-meter hurdles during the 2008 season. She has been a member of the Cougar Student-Athlete Advisory Board since 2007, and was elected vice president of this board in April of 2008. Boersma is academically motivated as well, holding a 3.3 GPA, placing her on the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll. Majoring in biology with a Spanish minor, she hopes to attend medical school to study dermatology after completing her undergraduate studies.

Passionate about both medicine and her community, Boersma has already completed over 100 hours of volunteer service in the Post-Anesthetic Care Unit at the Medical University of South Carolina. Some of her additional volunteer activities include mentoring and coaching young athletes in a Mt. Pleasant track and field clinic, and serving as a tour guide during the College of Charleston’s parent’s weekend.

“Our goal when we started this program eight years ago was to try and combine athletics, education and volunteerism into one scholarship,” commented Eleanor Adams, Family Circle Cup Tournament Manager. “This scholarship lets us recognize and celebrate the remarkable achievements of a top female student-athlete from the College of Charleston. We applaud Isabel for her spirit and dedication to achieving her goals and commitment to helping others.”

In addition to the $5,000 grant, Boersma had the opportunity to meet No. 5 seed Caroline Wozniacki after her match Wednesday night.
