Cup History: The young Argentine was next in line to receive the honor of champion when she won the Family Circle Cup title in 1991. Gabriela, who made her professional debut at the Cup in 1985 by reaching the final against Chris Evert, would win the prestigious crown again in 1992.

Career Overview: At 1990 US Open, knocked out Steffi Graf 6-2, 7-6(7-4) in final to win a Grand Slam singles title. At same event, became lowest seed to win in 22 years (No. 5 seed). Was first female from Argentina to win a Grand Slam singles title and first South American to win US Open since Maria Bueno in 1966. Extended Monica Seles 6-4, 5-7, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 before losing in the first-ever five-set season-ending championships final in 1990. Won the Silver Medal in singles at 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. $8 million mark in career earnings in 1995. Formerly youngest semifinalist ever at Roland Garros in 1985 when she was 15-years and three-weeks old when she lost to Chris Evert. Named the 1991 WTA Tour Most Improved Player and 1985 WTA Tour Most Impressive Newcomer. Ended career in 1996 with 632 match wins.
