Family Circle Tennis Center, Island House, and Spirit of South Carolina Partner to Assist Youth.
The Family Circle Tennis Center, Bauer International’s Island House, and the Spirit of South Carolina presented the first annual Captain’s Cup charity golf tournament on Tuesday, September 25, 2007 at the Daniel Island Club. All proceeds from this event will be used to establish a long-term training program for youth of the Cainhoy Peninsula aboard the Spirit of South Carolina. A limited number of foursomes were available for tax deductible purchase, with all proceeds benefiting Cainhoy youth.
The event generated $28,000 to provide twenty-five children with a one-week experience aboard the Spirit of South Carolina, in accordance with the mission of the South Carolina Maritime Foundation, where they will receive an effective, unique educational opportunity focusing on the history, math, science and literature of South Carolina's water resources to encourage personal responsibility, contribution to community, and stewardship of environment. Children will be chosen to participate in this program based on a combination of financial need and academic performance at their school.

“On board a tall ship at sea, educators come to understand how quickly shipboard life on the open water focuses students’ learning faculties and draws forth a sense of discipline,” noted Tony Arrow, Captain of the Spirit of South Carolina.
The exciting day of golf and entertainment began at 11:30 am with a buffet lunch in the Daniel Island Club’s luxurious dining room before each foursome set sail with a shotgun start commencing an exclusive Captain’s Choice round of golf on the Club’s Tom Fasio signature Beresford course. An evening cocktail reception aboard the Spirit of South Carolina continued this charitable event immediately following play and featured a tropical / nautical themed award ceremony including hors d’oeuvres, drinks, and a reggae band on the docks at Daniel Island.
“Our dedication and commitment to the Charleston community is very important to us, and what better way to make a difference here in this community than to use an event like this to benefit children who need it most.” stated Bob Moran, Sales & Business Development Director of the Family Circle Cup and Tennis Center.
The first place team received gifts including a game improvement getaway golf weekend for four at PGA of America Headquarters in Port Saint Lucie, Florida, and a name plate on the wood and brass ship’s wheel trophy to be engraved with the winner’s names and prominently displayed at the South Carolina Maritime Heritage Foundation. Duffers also competed for prizes from Bauer International’s Island House of Charleston including Closest to the Pin honors rewarded with a beautiful rattan and mahogany gondola bar with brass and leather top, including three bar stools, and a personal club and shoe locker awarded for the Longest Drive. Each participant received gift bags full of items from the Family Circle Cup and South Carolina Maritime Heritage Foundation.
“We are excited to be a part of this special fundraising event that will directly impact the families who live in the community surrounding the Charleston Island House, our flagship location,” commented Ken Bauer, Founder / President – Bauer International. “We’re proud to partner with other organizations who understand the importance of helping children to develop to their potential through special programs such as this.”
