Super Stats: Won her third Grand Slam Singles Championship at 2000 Australian Open and became the first American-born woman to win in Australia since Chris Evert in 1984. In February of 2000 became the seventh woman in tennis history to cross over the $10 million mark in career prize money. At one point during last year, she held the No. 1 ranking in both singles and doubles, a feat accomplished by only three other players. Winner of 30 Sanex WTA Tour singles titles including an Olympic gold medal in 1996.
Personal: Decided to try a different sport from the rest of her family so at the age of 7 started playing tennis. Her father and two sisters played competitive volleyball. Father is former Olympian from 1968 and her two sisters played collegiate volleyball. Won her first Grand Slam (U.S. Open) on her mother’s (Ann) birthday. Has a tattoo featuring the Olympic rings.
