A POST-MATCH INTERVIEW WITH: STEPHANIE FORETZ
THIRD ROUND WIN OVER MONICA SELES
6-4, 7-6 (6)
Q. Biggest win of your career?
STEPHANIE FORETZ: Yeah. The first.
Q. First time?
STEPHANIE FORETZ: Yeah. The best.
Q. How exciting is that?
STEPHANIE FORETZ: I played her last year, and I played good, and it was
6?3 in the third, and now with my coach we said I have a chance, and I
felt so good on the court, and I was more aggressive, but she's very aggressive,
too, and I started very good the match, yeah. And for one, it's better
to start like this.
Q. I know the fans are talking about so many seed players falling,
but are the players talking about that as well? When you beat a player
like number two, Monica Seles, do the players react to that? I mean so
many seeds have fallen in this tournament.
STEPHANIE FORETZ: No. Not exactly. You know, I just know how she plays,
but no. I didn't talk to everyone.
Q. I think what she's asking, this week at Family Circle many of the
top players have already lost early.
STEPHANIE FORETZ: Oh, okay.
Q. Are the players talking about these big players losing so early?
STEPHANIE FORETZ: Yeah. I know, but I don't know why.
Q. No explanation for it?
STEPHANIE FORETZ: No.
Q. Okay. Why do you think your game is going so well right now?
STEPHANIE FORETZ: I think it was the first, you know, forehand, backhand
it was very important against Monica because she play very fast, and I
think I must move her before me.
Q. Your serve was big. Did you know you have to have a good service
game today to win?
STEPHANIE FORETZ: Yeah. It was a good serve, yeah. And because she returned
very good second serve, and I think I must put the first serve in the
Q. Did you think you were capable of a run like this here, at this
Tier I event, getting so far in the tournament? Did you think you would
go so far?
STEPHANIE FORETZ: No. In the first round it was very hard, and the second
round in the qualis, 7?5. Normally it was 5?4 for her, and two points,
and I lost, yeah. Normally I am very happy to win the second round and
quali because I never do that.
Q. Were you concerned in the second set when Monica was up and serving
for the set?
STEPHANIE FORETZ: Yeah. I think I didn't panic, you know. I was very calm.
And I don't think of the score, and I just think what I can do and because
in the circumstance it's very difficult to play for me.
Q. At what point did you think "maybe I have a chance to win
this" and you really start visualizing what you have to do to win?
STEPHANIE FORETZ: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Q. In all of the match or?
STEPHANIE FORETZ: When it was second set, she leave 5?3 and yeah, but
I was very good in physic, you know, and I think I can win the third set,
but if I lost the second set, for me, it was no problem. I was very good
on the court.
Q. How much confidence does beating Monica give you in your game?
STEPHANIE FORETZ: When ??
Q. Do you get confidence from winning today, beating a big player
STEPHANIE FORETZ: Yeah.
Q. For the future, though?
STEPHANIE FORETZ: Yeah. Yeah. For me. For tomorrow.
Q. How will you celebrate tonight?
STEPHANIE FORETZ: I think after the tournament I can celebrate, but in
Paris, when I can come back in Paris.
Q. Talk about how important it was to make that early run in the tiebreaker
to kind of go up and get a little bit of a lead there.
STEPHANIE FORETZ: Yeah. When I was on match ball, I was like this (shaking),
and she serve good, I remember. And after, I think I must serve good,
and after, it was better for me to serve good.
